Red River Métis apprentice powers his future with MET support

The road to becoming a journeyman electrician has been shaped by sacrifice, determination, and community support - especially for Derek Lamy, a proud Red River Métis Citizen. With support from the Manitoba Métis Federation's Métis Employment & Training (MET) Department, he successfully completed Level 3 of his Apprenticeship Technical Training - Common Core Electrical program, taking a major step toward building a fulfilling and stable career close to home.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the ongoing support I received from the Métis Employment & Training (MET) program throughout my apprenticeship journey," Derek said. "Thanks to their sponsorship, I've now completed Level 3 of the Apprenticeship Technical Training - Common Core Electrical program."
For Derek, MET's assistance made all the difference - not just in financial terms, but in giving him the confidence to keep moving forward, even when the journey was hard. "MET's financial assistance made a huge difference," he said. "More than that, their encouragement gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward."
Leaving the Work Camp Behind
Before enrolling in his electrical training, Derek worked away from home as a driller - a job that took him far from his family in the Parkland region and left him longing for stability and time with loved ones. "Before I started, I was working away from home as a driller, which meant missing out on time with my young family," he said. "This program has changed the course of my life in the best way."
The decision to pursue a new path in the trades was both personal and practical. Derek wanted a career that would not only challenge him and provide growth, but allow him to remain rooted in his community. "Through this training and with MET's help, I was able to pivot into a rewarding career that allows me to live and work in the Parkland region," he said.
Training That Opened Doors
Derek's enrolment in the Applied Electrical Installation program at the Parkland campus marked a turning point in his life. The program gave him the hands-on training and theoretical knowledge needed to succeed in the industry - and just as importantly, it helped him make the right connections.
"Taking the Applied Electrical Installation program at the Parkland campus gave me the advantage I needed to find an employer willing to support my apprenticeship path," he said. "The experience gave me both the skills and the industry connections that helped me get my foot in the door."
Today, Derek works for Bob's Electric in Dauphin, Manitoba - a respected company that has supported his continued growth and training on the job. "I'm proud to be working with Bob's Electric in Dauphin, MB, a respected company that has supported me as I continue my apprenticeship."
His experience shows how local training, when matched with community-driven supports like those offered by MET, can lead to meaningful long-term employment. "The training and connections I gained through the program were essential in securing this role," he said.
Balancing Responsibilities and Pushing Through
The road to becoming an electrician wasn't without its challenges. With training available only in Brandon, Derek was faced with long commutes and time away from his family - on top of the already demanding workload of the program. "One of the biggest challenges I faced was the travel involved - training was only available in Brandon, which meant long commutes and time away from home," he said.
Still, he pressed on - motivated by his goals and the support he received. "Balancing that with family responsibilities wasn't easy," he admitted. "The experience taught me resilience and the value of community during challenging times." That resilience paid off. Despite the logistical and emotional strain of the journey, Derek stayed the course and came out stronger, both personally and professionally.
Competing - and Winning - on the National Stage
Derek's commitment to his trade was validated in a major way in 2023 when he won the IDEAL Battle of the Schools - a prestigious national competition for electrical students across Canada. "I was really proud to win the 2023 IDEAL Battle of the Schools," he said. "It's a national competition that brings together top electrical students from across Canada."
The victory was more than just a personal achievement - it was confirmation that the investment in his training, time, and effort was leading somewhere meaningful. "It was a huge confidence boost and definitely one of the highlights of my apprenticeship so far," Derek said. "The experience confirmed that all the hard work, training, and support I've received are really paying off."
Eyes on the Future
With Level 3 complete and valuable industry experience under his belt, Derek is now focused on finishing the final level of his apprenticeship and officially becoming a journeyman electrician. "My main goal is to complete my final level of training and become a certified journeyman electrician," he said. "I'm fully committed to my trade and plan to keep working and contributing within the Parkland region."
He's also thinking about the next generation - those who are just beginning their own apprenticeship journeys. Derek hopes to pass on what he's learned and help others navigate the same path. "I also hope to mentor future apprentices one day, just as I was supported early in my journey," he said.
With the demand for electricians remaining strong across Manitoba, Derek knows he's chosen a trade that can support him - and his family - for the long haul. "With electrical work being in such high demand, I feel fortunate to be in a position where I can grow a stable, meaningful career while supporting my family," he said.

Le chemin qui mène au métier d'électricien compagnon est souvent semé d'embûches. Pour Derek Lamy, citoyen fier des Métis De La Rivière Rouge, ce chemin a été façonné par le sacrifice, la détermination, et un solide soutien communautaire. Grâce à l'appui du ministère de l'Emploi et de la Formation des Métis (MET) de la Fédération Métisse du Manitoba (FMM), Derek a pu compléter avec succès le niveau 3 de sa formation technique d'apprentissage en électricité - tronc commun - franchissant une étape décisive vers une carrière stable et épanouissante, à proximité de sa communauté.
« Je suis extrêmement reconnaissant pour le soutien constant que j'ai reçu du programme MET tout au long de mon parcours d'apprentissage », affirme-t-il. « Grâce à leur parrainage, j'ai maintenant complété le niveau 3 de ma formation technique d'apprentissage en électricité - tronc commun. »
L'aide offerte par MET a été déterminante - non seulement sur le plan financier, mais aussi pour l'encourager à persévérer, même dans les moments les plus difficiles. « Leur aide financière a vraiment tout changé », souligne Derek. « Mais encore plus que ça, leurs encouragements m'ont donné la confiance nécessaire pour continuer à avancer. »
Quitter le camp de travail pour revenir à la maison
Avant de se lancer dans le domaine de l'électricité, Derek travaillait comme foreur dans un camp de travail éloigné - un emploi exigeant, loin de sa famille, qui lui laissait peu de temps pour se recentrer ou s'ancrer dans sa région natale du Parkland. « Avant de commencer, je travaillais loin de la maison comme foreur, ce qui signifiait rater de précieux moments avec ma jeune famille », raconte-t-il. « Ce programme a changé le cours de ma vie, pour le mieux. »
Choisir une nouvelle voie dans les métiers spécialisés était à la fois un choix de cœur et de raison. Derek voulait un métier qui le stimule, lui offre des possibilités d'avancement, et surtout, lui permette de rester enraciné dans sa communauté. « Grâce à cette formation et à l'aide du MET, j'ai pu me réorienter vers une carrière enrichissante qui me permet de vivre et de travailler dans la région du Parkland », dit-il.
Une formation qui ouvre des portes
L'inscription de Derek au programme d'installation électrique appliquée au campus de Parkland a marqué un véritable tournant dans sa vie. Ce programme lui a offert une formation pratique, un savoir théorique, et, tout aussi important, des connexions essentielles dans le domaine. « Suivre ce programme au campus de Parkland m'a donné un avantage décisif : j'ai pu trouver un employeur prêt à m'appuyer dans mon parcours d'apprentissage », explique-t-il. « Cette expérience m'a permis d'acquérir les compétences nécessaires, mais aussi d'entrer en contact avec l'industrie. »
Aujourd'hui, Derek travaille chez Bob's Electric à Dauphin (Manitoba), une entreprise bien établie qui soutient activement son développement professionnel. « Je suis fier de travailler avec Bob's Electric à Dauphin, une entreprise respectée qui continue de m'appuyer dans mon apprentissage. »
Son expérience démontre bien que lorsqu'une formation locale est soutenue par des programmes communautaires comme ceux du MET, elle peut mener à un emploi durable et significatif. « La formation et les liens que j'ai créés grâce au programme ont été essentiels pour décrocher cet emploi », indique-t-il.
Trouver l'équilibre et tenir bon
Le parcours vers le métier d'électricien n'a pas été sans défis. Comme la formation était offerte uniquement à Brandon, Derek a dû composer avec de longs trajets et des absences répétées loin de sa famille - en plus de la charge académique du programme. « L'un des plus grands défis a été les déplacements - la formation n'était disponible qu'à Brandon, ce qui signifiait de longues heures de route et du temps loin de chez moi », explique-t-il.
Malgré cela, il a persévéré - motivé par ses objectifs et soutenu tout au long de son parcours. « Trouver l'équilibre avec mes responsabilités familiales n'a pas été facile », admet-il. « Mais cette expérience m'a appris la résilience, et l'importance de la communauté pendant les moments difficiles.»
Et cette résilience a porté fruit. Malgré la fatigue et les sacrifices, Derek a tenu bon - et il en ressort plus fort, autant sur le plan personnel que professionnel.
Briller à l'échelle nationale
L'engagement de Derek envers son métier a été récompensé de manière éclatante en 2023, lorsqu'il a remporté le concours national IDEAL Battle of the Schools, qui regroupe les meilleurs étudiants en électricité du Canada. « J'étais vraiment fier de remporter ce concours en 2023 », affirme-t-il. « C'est une compétition à l'échelle nationale qui regroupe les meilleurs élèves en électricité de partout au pays. »
Cette victoire n'était pas qu'un accomplissement personnel - c'était la preuve concrète que tous ses efforts, son temps, et les investissements dans sa formation portaient leurs fruits. « C'était un énorme coup de pouce pour ma confiance en moi, et un des grands moments de mon apprentissage jusqu'à présent », dit-il. « Cette expérience m'a confirmé que tout ce travail et ce soutien en valaient la peine. »
Un regard tourné vers l'avenir
Maintenant qu'il a terminé le niveau 3 et acquis une précieuse expérience sur le terrain, Derek est concentré sur un seul objectif : compléter le dernier niveau de sa formation et obtenir sa certification d'électricien compagnon. « Mon objectif principal est de terminer ma dernière année de formation et de devenir officiellement électricien compagnon », indique-t-il. « Je suis pleinement engagé dans ce métier, et je souhaite continuer à travailler et contribuer à la région du Parkland. »
Derek pense également à la relève - aux jeunes qui commencent tout juste leur parcours. Il espère pouvoir, à son tour, accompagner de nouveaux apprentis. « J'aimerais un jour devenir mentor pour de futurs apprentis, tout comme j'ai moi-même été soutenu au début de mon parcours », confie-t-il.
