Celebrating Red River Métis Achievements
The Métis Employment & Training (MET) Department is proud to announce the winners of the 2026 Celebrating Red River Métis Achievements Contest (CRRMA). The annual contest recognizes Red River Métis Citizens who completed MET-supported education, training or employment programming between April 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, with support provided through the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program.
Now in its third year, CRRMA continues to provide Citizens with an opportunity to share their accomplishments and the impact that training, education and employment supports have had on their journeys. This year's submissions reflect the diverse goals, experiences and achievements of Red River Métis Citizens from across our Nation.
Each eligible participant received a $250 participation incentive for sharing their story, with three participants selected through a randomized electronic draw to receive an additional $500 cash award. We are proud to recognize this year's winners and celebrate the determination and achievements of all Citizens who participated.
Ricky Barker
Supported by the Northwest MET Office, Red River Métis Citizen Ricky Barker completed his studies at Western Academy Broadcasting College with MET support covering tuition and a living allowance. With less financial pressure, Ricky could focus on completing his program and building the skills to begin his career.
After graduating, Ricky secured a position with his hometown Swan Valley Stampeders as Director of Marketing. He hopes to continue building his broadcasting career, with a goal of working in the Western Hockey League within the next two to five years and, eventually, at the professional level.

Anika Vaags
Supported by the Southeast MET Office, Red River Métis Citizen Anika Vaags completed the Carpentry program at RRC Polytech with funding from MET for her education and required supplies. By easing the financial pressure of attending school, the support allowed Anika to focus on developing her skills, gaining practical experience and building confidence for a career in carpentry.
As a woman entering a traditionally male-dominated trade, Anika faced uncertainty about the industry. She credits the support around her with helping her find the confidence and motivation to pursue the work she loves. She is now exploring employment opportunities and hopes to one day operate her own renovation and real estate company, incorporating accessible features into the homes she works on.
"As a woman wanting to go into the trades, there was some fear of how well I would be able to work in this type of environment. However, with less financial stress and good people all around me I found a strength and motivation to really pursue what I love."
Adam Gabrielle
Supported by MET, Red River Métis Citizen Adam Gabrielle was able to leave a secure full-time job and pursue his goal of a career in law enforcement at Assiniboine Community College. Financial support helped ease the pressure of returning to school, allowing Adam to focus on his education and successfully complete his training.
Adam has since graduated from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service Recruit Training Program and is now a sworn police officer, serving First Nations communities and contributing to public safety. As he begins his policing career, he hopes to continue learning, build trust within the communities he serves and encourage other Red River Métis Citizens to pursue their own goals.
